Montgomery and the rest of Southeastern Alabama strongly supports the visual arts. The area holds a number of excellent art museums, and even many of the smaller communities are home to galleries featuring the work of local artists.
The museums throughout the area help foster educational growth and understanding in a variety of core fields. Many of these institutions are dedicated to the figures and ideals of the Civil Rights Movement, one of the most pivotal changes in the history of American society.
The River Heritage Region is fortunate to be the home of premier performing arts companies that filled with incredibly talented artists and performers. The area is also home to the Alabama Shakespeare Festival, perhaps the single most important performing arts even in the entire South.
Music helps shape a community's culture and define the identity of its citizens. The River Heritage Region has a long history of musical excellence from the development of blues and jazz to the artistry country music pioneer and Montgomery native Hank Williams.
